10 Tips to Grow your MSP Business

Every entrepreneur has the same dream. A successful business that attracts a large clientele, the ability to grow the business to its full potential, and the opportunity to make it profitable.

Not all of them will achieve this dream. But there's a lot to learn from the ones that do.

Gradient is always looking for ways to provide added value to our partners to help them achieve maximum success.

We are fortunate to have a number of former very successful MSPs among our members, who are deeply invested in helping to make the IT channel better. We reached out to two such individuals, Tim Coach and Ashley Cooper to get their insights on how an MSP can grow their business to its full potential. Below are some of the valuable feedback they provided.

Take your business to the next level

  1. Get your house in order by establishing documented workflows and processes that keep your business functioning optimally.
  2. Make sure your PSA (Professional Service Automation) and RMM (Remote Monitoring. Management) are properly set up (our Synthesize program provides easy access to 8 of the top PSAs in the industry).
  3. Create vendor partnerships that are right for your business.
  4. Provide cross-training for your staff to capitalize on the unique skills, abilities, and knowledge of key individuals by making them widely available to all employees.
  5. Establish a transparent communication process for clients and employees.
  6. Specialization can result in a higher price point and a niche clientele, find an area that is underserved and make it your own.
  7. Partner with other MSPs to cover gaps in your service offering
  8. Manual reconciliation is a pain, automate your monthly billing reconciliation to capture all revenue and save time and avoid headaches. (Gradient offers a billing reconciliation tool that makes the guesswork, headaches, and expenditure of time a thing of the past.)
  9. More and more businesses are offering their customers pricing based on a consumption model. By making this option available to your clients, you are demonstrating the ability to pivot quickly to meet the needs of your customers.
  10. Join a peer group of others in the industry to stay on top of trends and technologies (Tech Tribe, Evolve, Winners Circle, Robin Robins).

It's easy to find advice online on almost any subject under the sun. The trick to weeding out the good advice from the bad. The tips offered above are the result of the real-life experiences of veterans in the MSP space. They have been tested and proven to help many MSPs up their game and get a leg up on the competition.
